How to Become a Surgeon?
The training is very long,” says Siemionow, and future surgeons must be patient. Here’s how to become a surgeon:
- Get a bachelor’s degree: Most surgeons begin their careers with excellent grades in college. Several prerequisite courses are required to apply to medical education, such as chemistry and biology.
- Take the entrance exam for medical education: High scores on the MCAT are required to enter medical school.
- Stand out in medical education: Medical education is usually completed in four years. The curriculum includes clinical rotations, traditional courses and time in laboratories. Surgical residencies can be competitive, so doing well in medical school is important.
- Undergo a surgical break: After completing medical school, you will spend three to seven years of residency training.
- Pass a licensing exam: Graduates who wish to exercise medicine in the United States must first pass a licensing exam. Medical graduates with an MD take the US Medical Licensing Exam, and those with a DO take the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Exam. All states require surgeons to be licensed, although requirements vary.
